diminished, the second full-length album by 7minds released in the late summer of 2000 is the product of a new direction. Its unique blend of hard rock, horn-funk, and techno/trip-hop fits surprisingly well within the confines of mainstream music. “The album is a pleasure to the ear and soul complete with a beat-dance-political-stance-melodic-trance-enhanced-four-course-meal feel you won't find at your local grocery store,” says Casey ‘Contagious’ Burd (Vocals/Trombone).

“I think a lot of the album reflects rather personal feelings I've had over the years in relation to the choices I've made in life, whether it be relationships, music, or overall lifestyle. Some songs, such as ‘45 Mix’, are more of a general comment on popular music. At one point we seem to be condemning it, but we also enjoy playing the role of ‘rock star’ at the same time. I think these feelings reflect the fact that I personally enjoy a significant amount of popular music but sometimes am let down by its simplicity and its artists’ unwillingness to take chances musically. ‘45 mix’ is the product of taking a somewhat mundane popular musical idea and making it what I believe to be worthwhile and interesting to the listener. The album possesses a sense of urgency as it alludes to extreme emotions and circumstances, from powerful feelings of guilt to intense imagery, to frustration and bitter resentment. The second track, ‘Indifference’ is a story of betrayal and regret contorted into apathy in order to cope with guilt. ‘Run’ is a turbulent reluctance to becoming an adult and the responsibilities that come with it. The main theme behind ‘Fallen’ is coming to terms with carelessness.” (Casey Contagious)

Eric Hemion (vocals/keyboards) comments on the band’s latest efforts, “I view diminished as a darker, more cohesive collection of songs than our previous work, and I believe it further proves our ability to create our own unique sound by combining popular styles.” Although the title itself is a musical chord often used to create tension and a sense of darkness, it was also chosen to symbolize the “bare bones” approach 7minds drew upon while writing and recording the CD.
“Extraneous factors can easily enter and perhaps cloud the writing process. How will the public perceive this? Can they relate? Is it radio friendly? Will it sell? With this album, instead of focusing on tailoring our music to what we perceive the public would accept, we relied on our instincts and our collective state of mind at the time,” says guitarist Buzz Adubato.

“We all write the music. It’s what the band is founded on and how the name was derived. It sometimes makes writing a lengthy process, but we think the end result is a much better product.”

“This is the most polished and cohesive group of tracks we have ever recorded. We as a group have collectively learned how to work with one another, from the beginning of the writing process to the final mix of each song. Despite some differences in musical backgrounds, it’s the basic passion for music we all share that keeps us in this business, and above all it’s the motivation to be successful at something we love to do.” (Buzz Adubato)
